Six families of judgment
Values Tension, and Values Clarity
Everyone has values in the abstract. They are easy to hold when holding them is free. Values Tension is the specific moment the price comes due, when doing the thing you said you believed in will cost you the deal, the relationship, the number.
The failure is not usually a dramatic betrayal. It is the small, well-reasoned rationalization, the just-this-once, the redefinition of the value until it happens to permit what you already wanted to do. And the cases that test you most are rarely the obvious ones. You believe in transparency, but full transparency may cost a colleague their job. You believe in loyalty, but loyalty now means hiding information the room needs. You believe in compassion, but compassion for one person may create unfairness for ten others. Values clarity is mostly built in advance. If you work out what you actually hold only in the moment the pressure hits, the pressure will do the working out for you.
Where it shows up
- A disclosure that is honest but may cost a colleague their job
- A loyalty that now means withholding what the room needs to know
- A kindness to one person that quietly creates unfairness for ten
- A standard you set in calm that the quarter is now asking you to bend
How AI changes it
I will be careful not to make AI the villain of a story that predates it. People have been rationalizing under pressure forever. But a tool that will help you construct a persuasive case for anything, on demand, makes the rationalization faster and more fluent. When the argument for the thing you wanted anyway is one prompt away, the friction that used to give your conscience a moment to speak gets thinner.
The rep that builds it
Clarity is built by being tested, in stakes real enough that holding the line actually costs something, and finding out what you do.
Ask yourself
What value is becoming negotiable because the cost just arrived?
Common questions
- What is values clarity?
- Knowing what you genuinely hold before a high-pressure moment tests it, so your values are not defined on the fly by whatever you already wanted to do.
- When does Values Tension appear?
- The moment acting on a stated value carries a real personal cost, and your principles begin quietly negotiating with your interests.
- Does AI affect this?
- It does not create the failure, which predates it, but a tool that will build a persuasive case for anything on demand can make rationalizing faster and thin the friction that lets conscience speak.
